As it is with binoculars, so it is with scopes. Anybody who spends much time outdoors should own a pair of compact binoculars.
For most uses, 8x is a good magnification to choose. Binoculars provide three dimensional images that have more depth. Compact binoculars are generally guarded with rubber padding, and they come with a case and hanging strip.
It is a real treat for kids to go on nature walks or hikes with their parents, however we all remember how heavy the binoculars were for us as kids, right. Generally, if the objective lens is 50 mm then it is considered to be a large binocular; if it is 42 mm, it is full size; if it is 32 mm, it is a mid size. Binoculars with larger fields of view may work better, but the cost is considerably more.
Costlier monoculars with 30x or greater magnifications are made of better prisms and lenses. In most cases, pocket binoculars are of prism roof design and the front lenses and the eyes come in a straight line; such binoculars are usually compact. The lower the light situation is, the more powerful night binocular you will need.
Hunter's binoculars are now being designed with range finders and birdwatchers are seeing more of the increasing stabilization features they need in the latest birdwatching binoculars. When you travel, bring your binoculars, they will not add measurable weight to your luggage.
